台北

I am in Taipei (台北)! Because (因為) of that I have not been posting to this blog as often. There has been a lot keeping me busy like finding an apartment, opening a bank account, getting a working cell phone, and not to mention starting M.B.A. classes! Now that I'm finally feeling more settled I can once again focus on my mandarin skills. It's now or never.

Also, these posts are going to start to take a different format. Instead of trying to write anything I possibly can about my day, I'm going to use this place for typing up notes and study materials. Most of the time that means after I have a tutoring session I will review the material here. On other days I may just type freely, but we will see. 再見!

Entry 12 - 強

今晚我看電視。 Eling跟她的朋友一起在晚飯。 今天下午我去了健身房。 我要是強。

Last weekend Eling and I went to watch a ballgame together. The New York Mets are our favorite team. We went with two friends. Their names are Joe and Erika.

I've Been Messing Up 了

I just realized that many of my past posts included the particle 了 (because I've gotten into a habit of talking about something I already did) and that the placement of 了 in sentences has been completely wrong. I have been putting 了 after the object in the form of S + V + O + 了. For example, 昨天晚上我喝啤酒了 (attempting to say "Last night I drank beer"). Instead the 了 should be placed right after the verb and the sentence format should be S + V + 了 + O. Let's write a few sample sentences with 了 to hopefully get this right once and for all.

1) 我吃了晚飯。 Wǒ chī le wǎnfàn. I already ate dinner.

2) 昨天我們看了一電影。 Zuótiān wǒmen kàn le yì diànyǐng. Yesterday we watched a movie.

3) 他去打球了。 Tā qù dǎ qiú le. He went to play ball.

Entry 1 - 你好

This blog is going to be an experiment and (hopefully) a learning tool for myself. About two and a half years ago I took my first mandarin class at N.Y.U. I took three semesters of classes there, from early 2012 to mid 2013, but never really applied myself. Since then, I've stopped taking formal classes altogether and my mandarin studying has been made up of mostly Chinesepod and Skritter - but very inconsistently.

My plan for this blog is to not type in English much, and to only use Traditional Chinese characters. I'm going to start including the pinyin, but it's very hard to type on a keyboard so we'll see how long that lasts. If all goes as planned, I can look back as I progress and realize that at one point I was writing like a kindergartener. Let's begin!

大家好!我叫Dan。今天我不說中文。我是美國人和住在紐約欸。下個月我會住在台北。我的未婚夫是Eling。我愛她。

Dàjiā hǎo! Wǒ jiào Dan. Jīntiān wǒ bù shuō Zhōngwén. Wǒ shì Měiguó rén hé zhù zài Niǔyuē. Xìa gè yuè wǒ huì zhù zài Táiběi. Wǒ de wèihūnfū shì Eling. Wǒ aì tā.

Hello everyone! My name is Dan. Today I do not speak Chinese. I am American and I live in New York City. Next month I will live in Taipei. My fiance is Eling. I love her.
